No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 11 An Excerpt

For the next couple of days, Sharon, Ravi and his mother fussed over Yogita like mother hens. Afterwards when she felt much better, she thanked all of them profusely.

“I don’t have enough words to thank all of you, she said sincerely. They were all seated in her bedroom.

“May I take your leave now? I’ve troubled all of you a lot already. Ravi, I’m sorry that I spoilt your vacation by falling sick. As it is, you get such less leave from work! I feel guilty as Hell!”

“Oh, no problem,” said Ravi, waving his hand dismissively. “And no, you aren’t allowed to leave immediately! Not when we are scouting for proposals for you!”

Yogita gaped at him as if he was speaking gibberish! She was truly speechless. Could she even consider marrying another person, now that she was totally smitten by him? Of course, he couldn’t know that, could he?

No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 9 - An Excerpt

She felt the heat rising as she blushed a deep, beetroot red. She literally ran to the kitchen to avoid the panic which was building within her. Her heart seemed to be in a vice-like grip. Her pulse was pounding and her temples throbbed dully, with the onset of a migraine. Or was it something else?

Just as she poured herself a glass of chilled water from the fridge, the stainless steel bottle slipped from her shaking hands and toppled to the ceramic floor in a loud clatter. Immediately, almost immediately, Ravi was by her side.

She turned around startled, as she came face to face with him. He looked achingly handsome, in crumpled pajamas and tousled hair. His bare torso glistened with sweat. The chest hair curled all the way down…. She couldn’t help sighing. She pulled herself away saying, “I’m sorry that I woke you up. The bottle just slipped.”

“Oh, thank God, you are O.K. I thought you had fallen down.” His eyes skimmed over her. Bright, distraught face, silky hair cascading down all over her shoulders, pink, silk night-gown and heaving bosom. He caught his breath.

No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 7 - An Excerpt

“Oh Sharon, so sweet of you! This was the snap that we had clicked on Miramar beach, while on our college trip to Goa, ten years ago. You have carefully preserved it, just like me. Thanks dear!”

Sharon glanced at the frame. Two carefree youngsters with their multi-colored tank tops and dark jeans rolled up to their knees; were frolicking in the milky waves that loomed alarmingly behind them, in gay abandon. Both were footloose and fancy free! She felt a wave of nostalgia engulf her as she rushed towards Yogita and embraced her tightly, her eyes moist with affection.

“I miss those days, dear! Wish you would have been staying somewhere closer, so that we could have met more often,” she said softly.

“Yes Sharon. I wish the same, but we have to take life in our stride. I’m sure you are very happy here! I hope that I am not a kabab mein haddi now! How’s married life?”

She pinched Sharon’s waist and she squealed loudly. “Ouch! You deserve a spanking!”

“For being a kabab mein haddi?” teased Yogita.

“For being a mean friend! Why didn’t you come for my wedding? Katti!”

No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 5 (An Excerpt)

 Excerpt:

Ravi watched her laugh. Her head was thrown back in gay abandon. Her slender column of throat, ensconced in an elegant pearl necklace…Her glossy mane…Her flawless olive complexion… As she lowered her head and faced him again, he caught her unawares by softly saying, “Lovely eyes!”

She looked at him shyly as he repeated, “You’ve got lovely eyes. In fact, that was what drew me to your snap. Dark, humorous, compassionate eyes.”

“Sharon, I somehow know that you will be perfect for me. You’ll be kind to my mother too. My mother is a simple home-maker. While I globe-trot on my vessel, she stays back at Vishakhapatnam, leading a laid-back and calm existence. For her, her home is her world. She has befriended everyone in the neighborhood due to her gentle and kind ways. She won’t even hurt a fly!”

“I’m sure that she must be a gem of a person like you,” Sharon said boldly. She was irresistibly drawn to the handsome Ravi. She desperately wanted him to say “Yes”. But she didn’t want only companionship. She wanted love. Genuine love. Passionate love.

No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 28

                                          EXCERPT

                                                                  EXCERPT

The baby was chubby and ever-smiling. The slight cleft on his chin was delightful as were the dimples on his rosy cheeks. His jet-black hair was curly and made him appear radiant as the contrast with his flawless milky complexion was striking.

Each little squeal or plaintive wail of his, made Yogita mushy and over-protective about him. All her waking hours and even nights were spent tending to his needs. Though her Visa had been granted, she had decided to stay put in India as she didn’t want the baby to be affected by the sudden change in climate. Both Ritesh and she had decided to wait for at least a year, till she joined him in Canada.

One night, Yogita forgot her mobile in the living room and retired for the night in her bedroom. As the baby was sleeping soundly after the feed, she also tried to catch up on her sleep but she was wide awake.

No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 27

                                                                    EXCERPT

A richly embellished rose-pink sari with colorful flowers embroidered with pearls and zardozi, twinkled at her from the credenza. Ritesh’s suit was a jet black one with violet satin lapels, crisp white shirt and a black satin bow.

Even the accessories were ready. A seven-layered fresh pearl necklace with matching chandelier earrings, rings, maang-tika and pearl bangles with two dozens of matching pink bangles were ensconced in a huge velvet-lined box. A matching batuwa and bejeweled high-heel sandals were also placed in the side cup-board.

Ritesh’s belt, socks and polished black shoes were also neatly placed in another side cup-board.

The mattress on the bed had been covered with a soft pink satin bed-sheet and matching pillows. Fragrant candles lit up the room with their mellow light. Fresh pink roses welcomed them from every conceivable flat place in the room. Coffee table, credenza, cup-board top…

No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 26

                                                 Excerpt

One day while returning from the clinic, Ritesh took Yogita to a park nearby. The area was soothing with a small, but well-manicured lawn lined all around with colorful crotons interspersed with colorful, small flowers. Green benches lined the walk-way around the lawn. They sat on one. Ritesh had bought bhel for snacking on, while they conversed about the future.

Ritesh gazed longingly at Yogita. She looked bewitching in her sky-blue kurti with white and pink Kashmiri embroidery and soft-pink leggings. Her toes wriggled daintily as she removed her well-groomed feet from her slippers and placed them above the footwear. The pink nail color perfectly matched her leggings. Her face, thoroughly devoid of make-up, glowed with good health. She had carefully wound her pink dupatta around her wrists to hide her wounds’ dressing.

After some moments of companionable silence he said, “Yogita, my leave will end in 2 days’ time. What is your final decision? Yes or No? Even if it is a “No” I’ll not mind! But remember that I will always have you in my heart and soul. I will always be there for you. Just call me when you need me."

No Mother-in-law, Please! - Chapter 24

Excerpt

“All is lost Ravi! I can’t take it anymore. She has just refused to marry me. Knowing that she is feeling as if she is being forced into this alliance, I also cannot go ahead. Besides, she is also having some issues with my mother and sister. She wants to live separately after our marriage. I think that this relationship is doomed right from the start!” Ritesh sounded dejected. His voice was low and emotionless now.

“Ritesh, please don’t give up. Yogita is a nice girl, though very stubborn! I’m sure that you’ll be able to give her a good life with your caring and understanding nature. Your family should also support her.” Ravi tried to reason it out.

“So you want us to live separately and leave my family alone, that too in a sham marriage? Knowing Yogita, I doubt that she’ll come around! No Ravi, this marriage just spells trouble, in capital letters! I’ve decided to call it quits.” Ritesh’s tone was firm.
